What is VoIP?
« on: July 20, 2009, 09:41:55 PM »
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is the family of technologies that allow IP networks to be used for voice applications, such as telephony, voice instant messaging, and teleconferencing. VoIP entails solutions at almost every layer of an IP network--from specialized voice applications (like Skype) all the way down to low-level quality measures that keep those applications running smoothly.

To add on , Voice over Internet Protocol, is a method for taking analog audio signals, like the kind we hear when we talk on the phone, and turning them into digital data that can be transmitted over the Internet.

But the problem you would have with Voice over Internet Protocol is congestion. Because the data packets travel in same bandwidth. Making emergency calls also pose a threat since you cannot get information regarding the address.

Some Voice over Internet Protocol services would offer you some good features that are not available with your conventional phone. But the problem you might face here is that the service provider may not offer backup power in case you need them.

These Voice over Internet Protocol are nothing but  value added services and they find an important role in getting more revenue for the internet providers. Did you know that it is about £14.6 billion a year. Its huge money.

In order to help several business people Virgin Trains will be installing several numbers of its carriages with wireless local area networks. So now people will be able to make use of VoIP services on their commute to work.

The present scenario is that there are more emergency 999 calls that are now being made from VoIP hardware gadgets. So many phone companies are becoming more concerned with how the calls can be traced.

It is hardware and software that enables people to use the Internet as the transmission medium for telephone calls by sending voice data in packets using IP.
